In surprise and confusion at the exposure of his purpose, Judas rose hastily to leave the room. "Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. . . . He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night." Night it was to the traitor as he turned away from Christ into the outer darkness. Until this step was taken, Judas had not passed beyond the possibility of repentance. But when he left the presence of his Lord and his 655 fellow disciples, the final decision had been made. He had passed the boundary line.

Forundret og forvirret over at se sine planer røbet rejste Judas sig hastigt for at forlade salen. "Jesus siger nu til ham: Hvad du gør, gør det snart! Efter at han havde fået stykket, gik han straks ud. Og det var nat." Det var nat for forræderen, da han vendte sig fra Kristus og gik ud i mørket udenfor. Før Judas havde taget dette skridt, havde han endnu haft en mulighed for at angre. Men da han forlod sin Herre og sine meddisciple, var den endelige afgørelse truffet. Han var gået over grænsen.
