As soon as it was day, the Sanhedrin again assembled, and again Jesus was brought into the council room. He had declared Himself the Son of God, and they had construed His words into a charge against Him. But they could not condemn Him on this, for many of them had not been present at the night session, and they had not heard His words. And they knew that the Roman tribunal would find in them nothing worthy of death. But if from His own lips they could all hear those words repeated, their object might be gained. His claim to the Messiahship they might construe into a seditious political claim.

Så snart det blev dag, samledes Sanhedrin atter, og Jesus blev på ny ført ind i retssalen. Han havde erklæret sig selv far at være Guds Søn, og de havde udlagt hans ord som en anklage imod ham. Men de kunne ikke dømme ham på dette grundlag, for mange af dem havde ikke været til stede ved indkaldelsen om natten, og disse havde ikke hørt, hvad han sagde. Og de vidste, at den romerske domstol ikke i hans ord ville finde noget, der fortjente dødsstraf. Men hvis de af hans egen mund kunne få alle disse ord gentaget, kunne de måske nå deres hensigt. De kunne fortolke hans hævdelse af at være Messias som et oprørsk, politisk krav.
