De var nu på vej tilbage til deres hjem for at tænke og bede i håb om at få lys over det, der var så mørkt for dem. Under vandringen kom en fremmed hen og slog følge med dem, men de var så optaget af deres samtale, at de næppe bemærkede hans nærværelse. Disse stærke mænd var så nedbøjede af sorg, at de græd på deres vandring. I kærlig medfølelse fandt Jesus her anledning til at trøste de sørgmodige. Han begyndte at tale til dem, som om han var en fremmed. "Men deres øjne holdtes til, så de ikke kendte ham. Og han sagde til dem:
