I saw that the greatest curse that ever came upon my husband and Sister F was the instructions they received at ----- in regard to remaining inactive in order to recover. The imagination of both was diseased, and their inactivity resulted in the thought and feeling that it would be dangerous to health and life to exercise, especially if in doing so they became weary. The machinery of the system, so seldom put in motion, lost its elasticity and strength, so that when they did exercise, their joints were stiff and their muscles feeble, and every move required great effort and of course caused pain. Yet this very weariness would have proved a blessing to them had they, irrespective of feeling or unpleasant symptoms, perseveringly resisted their inclinations to inactivity. {1T 557.2}

Jeg så at den største forbandelse, der nogensinde kom over min mand og søster F, var den belæring de fik i ___ om at forblive passive for at komme sig igen. Begges fantasi var blevet sygelige og deres passivitet førte til den tanke, at det ville være farligt for sundheden og livet at arbejde, især hvis de arbejdede og blev så trætte af det. En organisme, der så sjældent får motion, mister sin elasticitet og styrke, så når den arbejder, vil dens led være stive og dens muskler svage og enhver bevægelse kræver en stor anstrengelse og forårsager selvfølgelig smerte. Alligevel viser denne byrde sig for dem at være en velsignelse for dem, hvis de trodsigt havde, uanset følelser eller ubehagelige symptomer, modstået deres tilbøjelighed til passivitet.
