No warm-hearted disciples now met Paul and his companions at Appii Forum and Three Taverns as before, when he was constrained to thank God and take courage. There was now no one like the courteous and kindly Julius, to say a word in his favor, no statement from Festus or Agrippa to attest his innocence. The change which had taken place in the city and its inhabitants—the city still scarred and blackened from the terrible conflagration, and the people, by tens of thousands, reduced to the most squalid poverty—seemed to harmonize with the change in his own condition and prospects. Through the surging crowds that still thronged the streets of Rome, and that looked upon him and his fellow-Christians as the authors of all their misery, Paul passed, not now to his own hired house, but to a gloomy dungeon, there to remain, chained night and day, until he should finish his course.{LP 307.1}

Den sidste fængsling

Paulus og hans ledsagere mødte nu ingen varmhjertede disciple i Forum Appii og Tres-Tabernæ som de gjorde før, hvor han var tvunget til at takke Gud og få mod. Nu var ingen som den venlige Julius, til at lægge godt ord ind for hoam, ingen udtalelse fra Festus eller Agrippa til at bevidne hans uskyld. Den forandring som var fundet sted i byen og dets indbyggere – byen var stadig mærket og formørket af den forfærdelige kæmpebrand, og folk, ved titusinde, var reduceret til det mest beskidte fattigdom – lod til at stemme overens med forandringen i hans egen tilstand og udsigter. Gennem de brusende mængder som stadig trængte Roms gader, og så på ham og hans medkristne som ophavsmænd for al deres elendighed, gik Paulus ikke igennem, ikke til sit eget lejede hus nu, men til et mørkt fangehul, for at blive der, lænket nat og dag, indtil han afslutter sin handlevej.
