True humility is evidence that we behold God, and that we are in union with Jesus Christ. Unless we are meek and lowly, we cannot claim that we have any true conception of the character of God. Men may think that they are serving God faithfully; their talents, learning, eloquence, or zeal may dazzle the eye, delight the fancy, and awaken the admiration of those who cannot see beneath the surface; but unless these qualifications are humbly consecrated to God, unless those to whom these gifts are entrusted seek that grace which alone can make their work acceptable, they are regarded by God as unprofitable servants.

Sand ydmyghed er et vidnesbyrd om, at vi har vore øjne rettet imod Gud og at vi lever i samfund med Jesus Kristus. Hvis vi ikke er sagtmodige og ydmyge, kan vi ikke gøre krav på til fulde at have forstået Guds karakter, Mennesker kan tro, at de tjener Gud trofast; deres talenter, lærdom, veltalenhed eller nidkærhed kan forblinde øjet, tiltale fantasien og vække beundring hos dem, som ikke er i stand til at se under overfladen, men hvis disse gaver ikke helliges til Gud i ydmyghed, medmindre de som har fået disse gaver betroet, søger den nåde som alene kan gøre deres arbejde acceptabel, betragter Gud disse mennesker som unyttige tjenere.
