Many seem to think that it is impossible not to fall under temptation, that they have no power to overcome; and they sin against God with their lips, talking discouragement and doubt, instead of faith and courage. Christ was tempted in all points like we are, yet without sin. He said, "The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me." What does this mean?--It means that the prince of evil could find no vantage ground in Christ for his temptation; and so it may be with us. "For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."

Mange synes at mene, at det er umuligt ikke at falde for fristelser, at de ikke har magt til at vinde sejr og de synder mod Gud ved at tale om håbløshed og tvivl i stedet for at tale om tro og mod. Kristus blev fristet på alle måder ligesom vi, dog uden, at synde. Han sagde: "Verdens fyrste kommer og i mig er der intet, som hører ham til." Joh 14,30. Hvad betyder dette? Det vil sige, at det ondes fyrste ikke i Kristus kunne finde en fordelagtig jordbund for sine fristelser. Og således kan det også blive for os. " Thi vi har ikke en ypperstepræst, som ikke kan have medlidenhed med vore skrøbeligheder, men en, som har været fristet i alle ting ligesom vi, dog uden synd. Lad os derfor med frimodighed træde frem for nådens trone for at få barmhjertighed og finde nåde til hjælp i rette tid."
