As the sinner looks to the law, his guilt is made plain to him, and pressed home to his conscience, and he is condemned. His only comfort and hope is found in looking to the cross of Calvary. As he ventures upon the promises, taking God at his word, relief and peace come to his soul. He cries, "Lord, thou hast promised to save all who come unto thee in the name of thy Son. I am a lost, helpless, hopeless soul. Lord, save, or I perish." His faith lays hold on Christ, and he is justified before God.

Når synderen vender sig til loven, bliver han klar over at han er strafskyldig. Hans samvittighed anklager ham og han føler sig fordømt. Hans eneste kilde til trøst og håb er korset på Golgata. Når han vover at tro på løfterne og tager Gud på hans ord, fylder fred og glæde hans sjæl. Han råber: Herre, du har lovet at frelse alle som kommer til dig i din Søns navn. Jeg er et fortabt og hjælpeløst menneske uden håb. Herre frels mig, ellers er jeg fortabt! I tro sætter han sin lid til Kristus og han står retfærdiggjort for Gud.
