Coming to earth to fulfil so gracious a mission, he was yet homeless, and often hungry and athirst. The men of his own nation hunted him with craft and intrigue, with jealousy and hatred. They despised him because he would not tolerate their sins, and praise, and glorify, and flatter them. His purity and holiness of character were a constant rebuke to those who deceived the people with their pretentious claims of superior righteousness. He knew the wickedness of the sanctimonious religious teachers, and said to his disciples: "Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven." He was betrayed by one of his disciples, who opened his heart to the suggestions of the enemy, when Christ reproved him. Satan works in the same way upon human agents in our day. When sinners are reproved, the enmity of their wicked hearts is stirred into intense hatred against the reprover. Christ's stainless life was a rebuke to the world, and the world hated him. He died a most shameful death, and made a full and complete sacrifice, in order that no one might perish, but that all might come to repentance. He made an atonement for every repenting, believing soul, in order that all might find in him a sin-bearer. If those who believe in him will but practise his words, which are spirit and life; if they will follow his example, and become a precious light to the world, they will do that for the world which no human philosophy can accomplish. The lessons of Christ lay a foundation for a religion in which there is no caste,--where Jew and Gentile, free and bond, are linked in a common brotherhood, equal before God, because they are all branches of the living vine. They believe in Christ as their personal Saviour.

Selv om Jesus kom til jorden for at udføre en stor mission, var han hjemløs og ofte sulten og tørstig. Hans egen nation jagede ham med list og intriger, skinsyge og had. De foragtede ham fordi han ikke ville tolerere deres synder, og prise, og forherlige og smigre dem. Hans karakter-renhed og –hellighed var hele tiden en irettesættelse for dem som bedragede folk med deres fordringsfulde krav på overmådelig retfærdighed. Han kendte de skinhellige religiøse læreres ondskab, og sagde til sine disciple: ”Thi jeg siger jer: Hvis jeres retfærdighed ikke overgår de skriftkloges og farisæernes, kommer I slet ikke ind i Himmeriget.” Han blev bedraget af en af sine disciple, som åbnede sit hjerte for fjendens antydninger, da Kristus irettesatte. Satan virker på samme måde på menneskeagenter i vore dage. Når syndere irettesættes, oprøres deres hjerters ondskab til intens had imod irettesætteren. Kristi pletfrie liv var en irettesættelse for verden, og verden hadede ham. Han døde en forsmædelig død og gav et helt og fuldt offer, for at menneskene ikke skal fortabes, men ledes til anger. Han skaffede soning for hver angrende, troende sjæl, for at alle i ham kunne finde én, der ville bære deres synd. Hvis blot de, der tror på ham, ville praktisere hans ord, som er ånd og liv; hvis de ville følge hans eksempel og være et værdifuldt lys for verden, ville de gøre det for verden, som ingen menneskelig filosofi har været i stand til. Jesu Kristi lære er grundvolden i en religion, hvor der ikke eksisterer nogen personsanseelse hvor jøde og hedning, fri og træl er forenet i et fælles broderskab, lige for Gud, fordi de alle er grene på det levende vintræ. De tror på Kristus som deres personlige frelser.
